Madame Butterfly

M had an extra ticket to Madame Butterfly at the LA Opera so she invited me to go along! Yay, thanks M! We all know the story, an American soldier marries Cio Cio San (Cio2 San for short), then dumps her, leaving her alone with child, gasp! Evil evil. Anyhoo, it was beautifully sang by Soprano Liping Zhang... she had a really haunting quality about her. Interestingly, some of the audience members wore Chinoise type of clothing to match the Oriental theme of the Opera... Here is a recital by Soprano Ying Huang of Un Bel Di Vedremo...the famous aria from Madame Butterfly.

Fun! I love the MB aria.

Sidenote: it's not as trendy in LA, probably because there aren't as many "old time" Chinese immigrant families there, but in SF it's very popular for women to wear Chinese-inspired clothing to formal events. I know a lot of people think it's cheesy, but sometimes the women look really great.
